interesting places in the world. India is home to this planet's
largest democracy, and is the earth's seventh largest country. Due to its
size and location, the country's population,
wildlife, geographical terrain and climate system are among the most diverse in
the world.
India presents the sights, smells, sounds, and tastes of our planet and its
people.

No venture to India could be complete without a visit to
the famous Taj Mahal, one of India's many
UNESCO World Heritage Sites. A vision of immortal love
and a lyric in luminous marble. An unearthly assemblage, its color changes with the
season of the day: warm yellow in the rising sun, bright in the afternoon,
red in the setting sun, and ice-blue in the light of the moon.
The Taj Mahal stands as a testimony to a timeless love story between Emperor
Shah Jahan and his beloved Queen Mumtaz. After her death in 1631, thousands
of workers and master craftsmen labored for 22 years to create this unique
masterpiece.

This is the
standard mode of transportation (riding an elephant) for entering the Amber Fort, near Jaipur. It is more
comfortable than riding a camel.

This is a photo taken in Veranasi (also called Benares), the Holy City on
the Ganges River. This is one of the most popular Indian sites for
cremations. The tall poles hold baskets that contain the ash of the mortal
remains of people who have died elsewhere. As the wind blows, those ashes
are scattered into the Ganges. |

Fatehpur Sikri was
built as the capital city for 16th Century Mughal Emperor Akbar. It is near
Agra. Because it was a ceremonial capital, it did not have fortifications.
Unfortunately, there was no water there either and the city had to be
abandoned. The very dryness of the area has preserved it as an architectural
wonder. Fatehpur Sikri is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The "Palace on Wheels" (website) was our second major vacation together. We went for
Valentine's Day, 1998. This luxury train (once belonging to the Maharaja) was
our rolling hotel for this trip. It is rated as one of the 10 best rail
journeys in the world.
