This is an approximate
overview map of our itinerary. We started in Santiago
(Valparaiso), Chile and headed south through the Chilean Fjords, the Strait
of Magellan to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world. From there, we
rounded Cape Horn, visited the Falkland Islands, Montevideo, Uruguay, and
ended in Buenos Aires, Argentina. |

And, here is a map of the county.

We were greeted in our
Millennium stateroom with fruit, champagne, and a personalized TV system. |

We boarded our ship in Valparaiso, a listed
UNESCO World Heritage Site. The photos from the left are our ship
across from the port terminal, the Valparaiso harbor, and an "ascensor" (an
elevator that goes up the steep hillsides) |

Our first port was
Puerto Montt. Left, the Puerto Montt skyline. Right, the ship as seen in the
Puerto Montt Harbor. |

Left, a view of Lake Llanquihue, Chile's largest lake and the 3rd largest
lake in South America. This photo was taken from a German museum in
Frutillar. Right, the impressive, snow-capped Osorno Volcano. |

 |
We traversed an area
full of deep glacial cuts - fjords, not unlike those found in Norway.
|
We entered the Strait of Magellan and were treated to some marvelous views
of glaciers. Right - on board ship at the Skua Glacier. Compare these with
photos of glaciers in Alaska (here).

A satellite view of
the Strait of Magellan. This is an unusually true-color image from the Aqua
satellite taken in August 2003. The strait separates the island Tierra del
Fuego from the continent: it is about 330 miles long (528 km) and varies
from about 2 to 15 miles (3 to 24 km) in width. In 1519, Magellan was
seeking a way to cross from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific. It took him
38 days to navigate the strait. In contrast, it took us less than 12 hours. |
|
Our next port was Punta Arenas, the last city on continental South America.
Left, we first sight the city, then we see the main streets perpendicular to
the shoreline. (R)

Pictured are the
statue of Magellan in Plaza de Armas Square in Punta Arenas, and a detail of
the plaque. |
Depicted on the Magellan statue are two Fuegian Indians (natives of Tierra
del Fuego). Legend has it that if you touch the foot of one of them, you
will return to South America. Here, we are pictured touching the correct
foot. This foot is rubbed so much that it is burnished to a bright golden
color.
